Abernathy Independent School District

District of Innovation

February 21, 2017

The Abernathy Independent School District is working through the process to become a District of Innovation.  As outlined in Chapter 12 of the Texas Education Code, districts can become eligible for this distinction if certain performance requirements have been met and that the district follows specific procedures outlined in the statute.  Pursuing specific exemptions is left up to each individual school district, which allows more local control to areas that would benefit our students and families instead of a “one size fits all approach.”

Districts selected for this distinction can ask for flexibility and/or exemption from certain sections of the Texas Education Code.  Abernathy ISD has asked for flexibility in the following areas:

  • Teacher Certification Requirements
  • Uniform School Calendar
  • Class Size Requirement
  • Designation of Campus Behavior Coordinator
