District of Innovation
The Abernathy Independent School District Board of Trustees has approved an Amendment to the District of Innovation Plan
Abernathy ISD has asked for flexibility in the following areas:
-
Uniform Group Coverage Program for School Employees
The Abernathy Independent School District has worked through the process of becoming a District of Innovation beginning in 2017-18. As outlined in Chapter 12 of the Texas Education Code, districts can become eligible for this distinction if certain performance requirements have been met and that the district follows specific procedures outlined in the statute. Pursuing specific exemptions is left up to each individual school district, which allows more local control to areas that would benefit our students and families instead of a “one size fits all approach.”
Districts selected for this distinction can ask for flexibility and/or exemption from certain sections of the Texas Education Code. Abernathy ISD has asked for flexibility in the following areas:
- Uniform School Start/End Date
- Teacher Certification Requirements
- Class Size Requirement
- Designation of Campus Behavior Coordinator
- Minimum Attendance for Class Credit
